A potato left in a moist place sprouts from its eyes, and a money-plant cutting can form roots in water. Many plants retain growth regions that can rebuild shoots and roots without first making seeds.

Vegetative propagation is asexual reproduction in which roots, stems or leaves give rise to new plants.

Potato eyes are buds that can produce shoots. Bryophyllum forms buds along leaf margins; when they fall on soil, they can develop into plants. Stem pieces containing nodes can form roots and shoots. People use layering, grafting and cuttings to multiply plants such as roses, grapes and sugarcane.

Growing Plants From Potato Buds

Purpose: test whether potato buds produce new growth. Place moist cotton in a tray and compare potato pieces containing eyes with pieces lacking them. Keep the cotton moist. Shoots and roots arise mainly from pieces with buds, showing that organised growth regions are necessary.

Growing Money Plant From Stem Pieces

Compare cuttings containing at least one node with pieces cut from between nodes. Keep one end in water. Cuttings with nodes are more likely to form roots and new leaves because nodes contain buds and active growth tissue.

Advantages And Limitations

Vegetative propagation can produce flowers and fruits earlier than seed-grown plants and can multiply varieties that make few viable seeds, including banana, some oranges, rose and jasmine. Offspring remain genetically similar to the parent, preserving useful features. The same similarity is also a limitation: a disease or environmental change that affects one plant may affect many of its clones.

Tissue Culture

Cells or a small tissue piece are removed from a growing tip and placed on a sterile nutrient medium. They divide to form a callus. Transfer to media containing suitable growth regulators causes differentiation into roots and shoots. Plantlets are hardened and transferred to soil. The method produces many plants quickly and can maintain disease-free conditions when carefully managed.
