The Importance of Variation

A population survives because its members possess features suited to their surroundings. Yet surroundings do not remain fixed. Temperature, water availability and other conditions can change. Variation gives a population more than one possible response to such change.
An ecological niche is the place and functional role occupied by a population in an ecosystem, including the conditions and resources it uses.
Stability Through Accurate Copying
Reasonably consistent DNA copying preserves features that already allow organisms to function in their niche. This consistency stabilises the population: offspring retain feeding structures, body organisation and other adaptations needed in the same environment.
Survival During Environmental Change
If every individual were identical, one drastic change could affect all of them in the same way. When variants exist, some may tolerate the new condition. In a population of bacteria living in moderate water, most may die after a large temperature rise, while heat-tolerant variants survive, reproduce and rebuild the population.

A variation is not automatically useful. Its effect depends on the environment, and a benefit to population survival does not guarantee an advantage to every individual.
