Areas in Real Life

Area becomes meaningful when connected to actual surfaces: a sheet of paper, a tabletop, a room floor, a school campus, or a large region of land. Different scales call for different units. A desk is inconvenient to describe in square kilometres, while a city is inconvenient to describe in square centimetres.
The most common mistake in real-life area conversion is to use a length conversion factor only once. Because area has two dimensions, the factor must be applied in both directions.
Estimate Before You Calculate
An A4 sheet is about 21 cm by 29.7 cm. Before multiplying, estimate: 21 is near 20 and 29.7 is near 30, so the area should be near 600 cm². The exact product is 623.7 cm². Estimation gives a quick reasonableness check.
Problem
Find the area of a 21 cm by 29.7 cm sheet.

Length Conversions Used in Furniture and Rooms

Length conversion is one-dimensional. For example, 5 inches = 5 × 2.54 = 12.7 cm. To convert the other way, divide centimetres by 2.54.
Problem
Convert 7.4 inches to centimetres.

Why Area Conversion Factors Are Squared
A square measuring 1 inch by 1 inch has each side equal to 2.54 cm. Its area is therefore 2.54 cm × 2.54 cm, not merely 2.54 cm². The conversion factor appears twice because both length dimensions are converted.
Problem
Convert 10 in² to cm².
- 1.1 in² = 6.4516 cm².
- 2.10 in² = 10 × 6.4516 cm².
- 3.10 in² = 64.516 cm².
Problem
Convert 161.29 cm² to in².
- 1.Each 6.4516 cm² corresponds to 1 in².
- 2.161.29 ÷ 6.4516 = 25.

Square Feet
Because 1 ft = 12 in, a 1 ft by 1 ft square contains 12 × 12 one-inch squares. Therefore 1 ft² = 144 in². Again, the factor 12 is squared.
Problem
A rectangular room is 12 ft by 10 ft. Find its area in ft² and in².
- 1.Area = 12 × 10 = 120 ft².
- 2.Each ft² contains 144 in².
- 3.120 × 144 = 17,280 in².
Square Metres and Square Kilometres
Since 1 km = 1000 m, a square kilometre is a 1000 m by 1000 m square. Therefore its area is 1,000,000 m².
This enormous factor explains why km² is suitable for large towns, cities, districts, lakes, and regions, while m² is better for buildings and plots.
Acres and Local Land Units
An acre is a land-area unit equal to 43,560 ft². Unlike square metres or square feet, the name does not directly display its square-length origin, so the conversion must be known or looked up.
Different parts of India also use local land units such as bigha, gaj, katha, dhur, cent, and ankanam. Some of these units have different numerical meanings in different regions. A local conversion should therefore be taken from an authoritative regional source rather than assumed to be universal.
If 1 unit of length becomes k smaller units, then 1 square unit becomes k² square units. For example, 1 ft = 12 in but 1 ft² = 144 in², not 12 in².
Choosing Sensible Units
A useful measurement communicates scale efficiently. Paper may be measured in cm², a room in m² or ft², a school campus in m² or acres, and a city in km². Choosing a sensible unit reduces unwieldy numbers and makes comparisons easier.
